General Managers

Workers in this unit group plan, direct, control and co-ordinate, on proprietors' or on own behalf, the activities of an industrial, commercial, public utility, transport, communication or other enterprise or organisation. Their functions include: formulating and determining, within the powers delegated to them by a board of directors or similar governing body, or by official decree, the general policy and programme of the enterprise or organisation; determining the methods by which the programme should be carried out; controlling and co-ordinating the activities of the different functional sections of the enterprise or organisation; conducting or directing negotiations on behalf of the undertaking; approving senior staff appointments. General managers and working proprietors of certain types of establishments are specifically excluded from this unit group: see definition of minor group 2-1. Government administrators are classified in unit group 2-02.
