This data story is a short introduction on how ORCIDs help the IISG to advocate products and services. The IISG is a Royal Academy of the Arts and Sciences (KNAW) institute that hosts collections and performs research on labour relations, specifically in relation to social and economic inequalities. The output of IISG comes in a large variety of products and services and it is often helpful to be able to pinpoint research, data and collections to persons as a first go-to when in need of help. Similarly, professionals (e.g. researchers and archivists) feel compelled (or are even obliged) to keep a record of the products and service they need to deliver. In both cases, ORCID.org provides a solution by allowing professionals to (1) create a unique id that is shareable across the World Wide Web, and (2) allow professionals to (automatically) gather data on their output.
We start of by asking how many KNAW-IISG staff members already have an ORCID that we know of. We've obtained this list from Pure.

The graph below is a teaser for our ORCID registration party. At the time of writing it consists of 18 staff members with at least 1 and at most 114 publications. Compare these figures to the graph below. Did more persons register their ORCID?

We can use a search term to search in all titles of works by IISG staff. Below the query results are presented for the search term "women". You can replace this default value by any word and matching titles including authors last names and orcids will be returned. When you like a result you can quickly go to the relevant article by clicking on the link in the workLink column. You can just as swiftly see more works of the IISG staff member by clicking on the link in the ORCID column.

ORCIDs could also be used to gain a quick overview of a staffer's bio. Fill out part of a name in the search box and see what titles are associated to this person. Clicking on the link beneath the title, leads directly to the staffer's ORCID page.

The ORCIDs also allow us to see who is writing with whom. Unfortunately, in the graph we are unable to display clickable links, but you can 'try this query yourself' and then select 'table' as results.

Finally, we can perform a quality check on the metadata and for example warn IISG staff of duplicates. Duplicates might happen, because various scraping algorithms may pickup the same creative work with slightly different metadata. IISG staff can already correct this in their ORCID account.
