Tsar Peter the Great of Muscovy (1672-1725) was determined to modernise Russia. He set out on a fact-finding tour around Europe. In 1697, Peter paid his first visit to Amsterdam, where he worked as a carpenter at the VOC shipyard. When he founded St Petersburg, the skilled Dutch workmen he hired played a central role.
