Because it passed through the heart of the Jewish quarter, tram 8 was known before the war as the Jews’ tram. In July 1942, Jews are forbidden to use public transport. Soon after, tram 8 is discontinued. With one exception, to transport Jewish prisoners to Central Station. And hence to Westerbork. Since the war, no tram 8 has ever appeared on Amsterdam’s streets.
