These hats, together with many costumes and shoes, originate from the legacy of Sophia Augusta Lopez Suasso-de Bruijn (1816-1890). She bequeathed her collection of applied art and many clothes to the city of Amsterdam. In a notebook Mrs Suasso made a list of the clothes that were to be kept – about seventy items of ladies’ and men’s clothing, thirty-five hats, eighty pairs of shoes and two hundred and fifty accessories. Only some of the objects mentioned in the notebook are in the museum collection.
