Although personal recommendations had always been very important, at the beginning of the twentieth century the big fashion houses started to produce advertising leaflets and catalogues. These kept customers up to date with the latest fashion trends. The leaflets and catalogues weren’t distributed door to door but sent to regular customers. Every fashion house had its own clientele and focused on a specific target group. There was of course competition between the different fashion houses, which made advertising even more important.
