Hindoestaanse trouwjurk (Sari)

Geeta and her future husband worked in the same department store in Parimaribo. They were married in March 1978, when the bride was eighteen years old. As she was a Hindustani, she celebrated the event with a traditional wedding feast which went on for three days. Many members of the family living in the Netherlands flew to Surinam a week before the event to help perform all sorts of traditional wedding rituals. Her mother made the red sari worked in gold thread she wore at the wedding, the colour red being a symbol of purity. A year after she married Geeta moved to the Netherlands. She had wanted to emigrate from the age of eleven because she imagined the Netherlands to be very different from her native country and was keen to see for herself. Her husband left ahead of her in May 1979 and she followed in November. Geeta is pleased that there are a lot of Hindustanis living in Amsterdam-Oost but is disappointed that the Hindu temple on the Tilanusstraat has been closed down.
