He was Amsterdam’s first social-democratic councillor in 1914. Floor Wibaut (1859-1936) was a legend in his own lifetime. As councillor in charge of finance and housing he introduced measures to benefit the working class. He had thousands of slums demolished and built entire new working-class neighbourhoods, as did his successor Salomon de Miranda. His election slogan Who’s building? Wibaut! (Wie bouwt? Wibaut!) is still famous.
