Drieluik van de familie Heereman met de aanbidding der koningen

This Adoration of the Magi is set against a classical background. In the wings we see a family with many children gazing at in adoration at the biblical scene in the main panel. The traditional triptych form lends emphasis to the symbolic distance between the people portrayed and the central scene. In the left wing we see the father and six sons, on the right the mother and six daughters. The grave-clothes in which one daughter and one son are wrapped The grave-clothes that one daughter and one son are wearing indicates that they were still born. Recent research has shown that this is the second family of the Amsterdam apothecary Claes Bouwenszn Cat (d.1536) and his wife Volckgen Jansdr (before 1489–1551). The son and his wife from Cat’s former marriage are also portrayed. Cat commissioned the triptych from Jacob Corneliszn for the family altar, possibly in the Nieuwe Kerk.
