Koffieservies, 16-delig (kop en schotel)

The Douwe Egberts coffee-roasting company, set up in 1753, donated this set to the Amsterdam Historic Museum in 2003, in honour of the company’s 250th anniversary. The set is decorated with images of familiar spots in Amsterdam; the milk jug, for example, depicts the Hogesluis bridge over the Amstel (1662). This seventeenth-century bridge (located between the Amstel Hotel and Theater Carré) was replaced in 1883 by the current bascule bridge. On the coffee pot we can see the Leidsegracht and Herengracht (1613), and the sugar bowl presents the High German Synagogue. This Large Synagogue – or Dritt Sjoel – is now home to the Jewish Historic Museum. The Haarlemmerpoort and Maagdenhuis are depicted on the coffee cups. The Haarlemmerpoort, built by Hendrik de Keyser in 1618, was replaced with a new gate in 1840, which still stands today. The Maagdenhuis – a Roman Catholic orphanage for girls – dates to 1870 and is now the administrative centre of both the University of Amsterdam and Amsterdam’s university of professional education.
