The youngest son Karel Lodewijk had an unusual postcard collection. Around 1900 children were told babies ’came from the cabbage patch’ or were ‘brought by the stork’. Little Amsterdammers sometimes heard ‘from the Volewijk’. A 17th-century gallows site, it was a strange place for babies to come from.
