Prins may have copied this Amsterdam scene after Van der Heyden’s painting in the A.L. van Heteren Gevers collection in The Hague. This collection was acquired in its entirety in 1809 for the Rijksmuseum. In the scene the buildings at Herengracht 168-172 are combined with the Old Haarlem Lock near the harbour. Today this lock no longer exists. In its place is the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal where it joins the Prins Hendrikkade.
