Rokin bij avond

Rokin, an important road in Amsterdam, was a popular subject for Breitner. In this twilight scene he has painted the road as seen from the building of the Arti & Amicitiae artists’ society. The view leads from Langebrugsteeg, right, to Beurspleintje, in the distance left. Breitner catches the evening mood with the subdued tones from his palette. Pedestrians, coaches and a cyclist pass beneath an overcast sky. The reflection on the paving stones indicates that it has been raining. The streetlamps, illuminated windows and horse-drawn trams in both directions along the water lend subtle nuances of colour.
