Partly due to the influence of photography, the view in this painting looks almost straight down, making the horizon very low. Breitner uses this perspective in both his paintings and his photos. The lower half is predominantly dark in colour with just a single accent in colour in the form of measuring rods and men with wheelbarrows. Building sites were one of the most favourite subjects of the artist.
