In this scene one looks northwards from the frozen Spui. Under the bridge the ice continues along the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal. On the right is the Begijnhof, with the English Church that still stands on this spot today. The cloudy sky betrays the influence of Van Kessel’s master, Jacob van Ruisdael. The two painters often went on outings together, for example in 1664 to the ruins of the Kostverloren House on the Amstel.
