Gezicht op de Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal met de voet van de Nieuwekerkstoren

The painting shows the base of the Nieuwe Kerk tower. Dating from 1648, it was never finished and in 1783 it was demolished. The Donkere Sluis was a wide lock that bridged the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal, a canal that was only filled in in 1883/84. It can be seen in the background with the rear façade of the Town Hall.
