De Nieuwmarkt met de St. Anthoniswaag

Isaac Ouwater counts as one of the 18th-century specialists in cityscapes. This view of the Nieuwmarkt shows the south-west façade of the Waag, or weighhouse building. It is late afternoon. In the foreground two women are discussing the wares of an antique dealer. He is selling old books and paintings as well as ceramics. On the left is a shop selling ‘Clothes for sailors and burghers’. The Waag was built in 1488 as a city gate. In around 1617–18 it was no longer required in this function and was converted for other purposes. The offices of the guild of painters, surgeons and masons were housed here for instance.
