In Amsterdam Gerrit Berckheyde painted mainly cityscapes featuring new buildings. From Grimburgwal he depicted the view along the canal. The Oudezijds Herenlogement is prominently in view on the right. Designed by Philips Vingboons in 1647, eminent guests of the city stayed in this guest house. Next to it is the step gable of the warehouse known as Het wapen van Amsterdam. The complex was demolished in 1876 to make room for the extension of the Binnengasthuis, a hospital. The entrance to the guest house is now part of the façade of no. 365 Keizersgracht. On the left is the (House on the three canals) dating from 1609, that still exists. The portal in the distance is the entrance to the St Pietersgasthuis, also a hospital.
