The Lord Mayor of London, Sir Kynaston Studd, visited Amsterdam in the summer of 1929. On Saturday 20 july the city council gave a dinner in his honour on behalf of Queen Wilhelmina in the Royal Palace on Dam Square. Recent refurbishing of the Citizens' Hall had revealed the marble inlaid floor. The painting shows the guests chatting in the light of the impressive chandeliers. The main figures, the Lord Mayor and Burgomaster De Vlugt, are depicted to the left of centre. Monnickendam painted himself with one of his students in the right foreground. The painter's wife and both of their daughters are shown on the far right.
