Zaagmolens bij Amsterdam

In 1906 Jan Sluijters lived in Paris where he came under the influence of modern French painting. After his return he painted in vivid, unrealistic colours. From 1907 to 1909 his studio was in Kostverlorenstraat in West Amsterdam, and he painted this view from his window. The Paltrok sawmill Het Luipaard (the Leopard) can be recognized left and De Otter (the Otter) in the centre. Of the dozens of mills the area once boasted, De Otter is the only one that remains.
