The Amsterdam manufacturer Charles Boissevain and his wife Maria Pijnappel had ten children. In 1916 their six daughters, then aged between six and nineteen, spent many hours in the studio of Thérèse van Duyl-Schwartze. The girls had a sheltered upbringing, being largely looked after by a nanny till they were twelve.
