Sugar factories cannot operate without fuel, a fact which left them vulnerable to fire. The introduction of steam boilers did not help matters. On 19 October 1845, fire struck I.H. Rupe & Zoon, and their factory on Keizersgracht near Westermarkt was lost. A church was built on the site in 1853. A drawing of the fire exists by B. de Pré, as does a drawing of the ruins left by the fire, by J.G.L. Rike.
