Het Huis Kostverloren aan de Amstel

The Kostverloren House was built around 1500, on a bend of the River Amstel. The painting shows the first phase of its renovation, after the house had been damaged by fire in 1650. In April 1658 the then owners were granted permission to rebuild. The house was finally pulled down in 1822. ‘Kostverloren’ means ‘waste of money’, which seems to refer to the continually recurring expenses in counteracting the sinking of the foundations. Jacob van Ruisdael was the most famous member of a family of landscape painters. He was born and trained in Haarlem. Around 1656 he settled in Amsterdam, where he remained working until his death.
