Allegorische voorstelling op het overlijden van Albertus Titsingh (1714-1790)

Albertus Titsingh (1714–1790) was a renowned surgeon and obstetrician. Behind his portrait is St. Bavo’s Cathedral in Haarlem, where Titsingh lies buried. On the pyramid-shaped epitaph are the coats of arms of Amsterdam and those of the Titsingh family. Cherubs hold aloft the motto of the famous doctor Herman Boerhaave (1668–1738). A mournful pregnant woman is borne by the Maid of Amsterdam to the goddess Juno, protectress of marriage and childbirth. Andriessen is mainly known for his paintings of Arcadian landscapes, used as wall-hangings in the canal houses.
