Interieur van de suikerfabriek "De Granaatappel"
De Granaatappel was founded in 1778 by Dirk Scholten. In 1846 the family firm came into the hands of the sugar giant Spakler and Tetterode. The new owners introduced steam to the factory at Lijnbaansgracht no. 34. At that time, the colonial plantations of the Dutch East Indies produced a cheap supply of Javanese sugar. Sugar refining was an important secondary industry in Amsterdam. The painter Scholten was a member of the Scholten ‘sugar family’.
