De eerste stoomboot op het IJ

The English ship The Defiance put in at Amsterdam harbour on 24 September 1816 as part of a promotional tour. King Willem I and his family travelled to the capital especially for the occasion. Captain and owner William Wagnel was unable to persuade Amsterdam to use his vessel for a regular service, having previously failed to interest the city of Rotterdam when demonstrating his ship in May of the same year.
