Het kalefateren van een schip

Nooms was one of the first Dutch painters to specialize in painting ships. Here a flute is depicted, being repaired below the waterline. First the ship had to be emptied and stripped. Then the skin of the ship was heated with clumps of burning straw and scraped clean. The seams between the planking were then caulked (cleaned and made watertight). Lastly, a layer of tar was applied.
