Cornelis Maartensz. Tromp (1629-1691)

As vice admiral under De Ruyter, Tromp played an important role in the Four Days’ Battle from 11-14 June 1666. The Dutch Republic of the Seven United Provinces fought many wars in the 17th century to safeguard her international trade. Cornelis Tromp, his father Maarten Harpertsz. Tromp, and Michiel Adriaensz. de Ruyter were among the most successful fleet commanders of the century. Cornelis Tromp fought against the English in three Anglo-Dutch Wars (1652-1654, 1665-1667 and 1672-1674), in the Fourth Northern War (1655-1660) and later against Sweden from pirates in the Mediterranean. After De Ruyter’s death (1607-1676), Tromp succeeded him as lieutenant-admiralgeneral in 1678.
