Prins Maurits (1567-1625)

Prince Maurice (1567-1625) is the son of William of Orange. He is captain general of the Dutch Republic’s army and highly successful in the war against Spain. He establishes his reputation by defeating a Spanish army at the legendary Battle of Nieuwpoort 1600. The Dutch parliament, or States General, rewards him with the suit of gilt armour he is wearing here. The blue ribbon is a symbol of the Order of the Garter, which he receives in 1613. In the 17th century, portrait paintings such as this are displayed in town halls and in the homes of the prince’s entourage.
