De Nieuwe Kerk en het Stadhuis gezien vanaf de Donkere Sluis

A tower was never added to the Newe Chruch although a start was made on two occasions. In 1565 builders got as far as driving the piles into the ground. a second attempt was made in 1645 reaching half the height of the nave. Designs for the whole tower have survived: two are exhibited in room 10. The fialure to finish the tower may have been due to poor foundations. Another reason may have been the new town hasll: construction on this building started in 1648 and swallowed all the city´s money and energy. Most of the unfinished tower was removed in 1783. The painting also depicts a number of coach sleighs used by teh well-to-do.
