Cornelis van der Voort paints the very first Dutch group portrait of governors of a charitable institution; it is destined for Amsterdam’s hospital. He groups the gentlemen very cleverly around the table, so that they can show off their administrative skills. They club together and pay 318 guilders (around 4,500 euros today) for the painting and the frame. The ordinary people of Amsterdam cannot afford a portrait like this. Most of their income goes on food and housing.
