In most civic guard portraits the officers are placed in the centre. Here they are emphasized even more strongly—the captain, the ensign and the lieutenant are a good deal larger than the rest. A fascinating detail: the lieutenant, in the foreground on the right, owes his rank to the fact that the father of the captain, foreground left, was dismissed as an officer. The two families have evidently made peace.
