Aanbidding der herders (fragment)
An ox casts a curious eye in our direction. Originally it was a witness to the Adoration of the Shepherds in the stable at Bethlehem. Two of the shepherds can be seen leaning forward. The panel is a fragment, probably from a large Nieuwe Kerk altarpiece. Presumably it was broken up during the rioting that accompanied the Alteration in 1578. This section is all that survives.
