The large building is a part of the East India House, a large complex of buildings owned by the United East India Company (VOC). The VOC, established in 1602, held the Dutch Republic´s monopoly on all trade to the east of the Cape of Good Hope. Its offices and meetingrooms were in the East India House, which was also where sailors signed on for service in the VOC fleet. The premises provided storage space for ships´ provisions, and even included a slaughterhouse. The VOC employed large numbers of seamen, shipbuilders, stevedores and warehouse porters.
