De Dam, gezien naar het Noorden, met het Stadhuis in aanbouw

Dam Square is the busy heart of the city. Besides porters and ordinary traders, here we can see wealthy burghers attended by their servants. On the far right several oriental merchants are negotiating a deal; behind them, near the crane, is the fish market. Lighters with goods from the ships in the harbour are moored in the Damrak. The goods were weighed and taxed in the weigh-house, the building in the middle of the painting. From there they were transported by cart or horse-drawn sledge to the warehouses and shops. On the left you can see the new town hall being built. The men in front of the building are officers of the law, recognizable by the staffs of justice they are carrying.
