The Stock Exchange, designed by Hendrick de Keijser, was built between 1608-1611 over the water of the Rokin. Merchants and brokers met every day between twelf and one o'clock. The weekly official price list included around 600 different goods. On each of the 46 pillars of the gallery, a notice was put up listing the goods on sale there or the harbours the traders specialized in. It was decided to extend the building in 1668. A large statue of Mercury was placed in the new extension. Thr Stock Exchange also traded in shares, obligations ans other bonds. The success of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) and the high dividend payments resulted in wild speculation.
