An almshouse was established in 1613 ‘to prevent all manner of abuse in this prosperous city, and to take the beggars off the streets’. Here food was distributed and the poor, foundlings and orphans could register for aid. It made no difference what their background was. The governors are shown in this portrait performing their charitable work.
