Gezicht op de Binnen-Amstel met het Rondeel

The painting is one of the earliest realistic depictions of Amsterdam. The Round Tower, part of the fortifications of Amsterdam, was constructed in 1535. After the city extensions in 1593 the tower was now within the new city walls, so losing its purpose. It was pulled down in 1630/31. To the right of the Round Tower, the Swycht Utrecht (which means 'Utrecht keep silent') Tower can be seen. In the background is the spire of the Zuiderkerk (South Church), completed in 1614. We can thus date the picture to between 1614 and 1631.
