De brand van het oude stadhuis op de Dam (7 juli 1652)

Early in the morning of 7 July 1652 fire broke out in the attic of the old town hall on Dam Square. Every effort was made to stop it. Chains of people passed up buckets of water - there was only one hand-operated pump available. Long ladders were used to climb up en throw the water inside, while the contents of the town hall were carried outside. Quantities of archival material were destroyed; the gold coins from the Exchange Bank were found later, melted together into huge lumps. The city fathers blamed the night watchmen for their carelessness but the latter protested vehemently that they were in no way responsible. It seems that the fire was caused by the heat and dryness of the summer days.
