Several artists have painted the collapse of the St Anthonis Dyke in 1651. Jan Asselijn shows the situation immediately after the disaster. He presents the event to the viewer in a subtle way. Disaster tourists have gathered on either side of the scene of the event. The wild clouds in the sky and people’s jackets blowing in the wind suggest that the storm has not yet subsided. Asselijn is one of the most important Italianate landscape painters. On his return from Italy in 1647 he settled in Amsterdam.
