Jacob Fransz. (ca. 1635-1708) en zijn familie in de chirurgijnswerkplaats

Here Jacob Fransz introduces his family to us in his surgery and livingroom. Jacob Fransz, master surgeon since 1657, is seen bleeding his brother Thomas Fransz. His son Thomas is holding a bowl to catch the blood. On the right, Jacob’s wife Anna Jans is busy with her needlecraft on her lap, and beside her are their son Frans and daughter Francijntje. Like their father and grandfather, both Jacob’s sons also became surgeons. In the background, an assistant is shaving a customer. There were so many surgeons in Amsterdam that it was impossible to earn a living from surgery alone. It was quite normal therefore to find a surgeon offering customers a shave or a haircut.
