After the completion of the Oosterdoksdijk in 1830, construction of the locks could begin. Crown Prince Frederick laid the first stone on 11 June 1830. The year 1831 saw celebrations to mark the reaching of the highest point. The Oosterdokssluis consisted of two parallel locks, which proved too narrow as the years went by. The largest lock was widened twice, until the lock gates were finally removed in 1908.
