De grote binnenplaats van het Leprozenhuis

Because of the danger of contagion, the Leper House was located outside the city (on today’s Mr Visserplein). As the city expanded, the house found itself within the town walls. That was around 1600. By then, the number of inmates who actually had leprosy had fallen and gradually the house acquired a new use. In the 18th century it became a home for ‘simple and stupid’ people as well as accommodating people who paid a fee to become residents. The Leper House closed in 1859
