Gerrit Jacob Witsen (?-1626)

Witsen († 1626) was a rich grain merchant with vested interests in trade with the Baltic and the Orient. He served eight terms of office as burgomaster. Initially he was one of the leaders of the orthodox Calvinists, who were staunch supporters of the dominance of the church in matters of government. Later in his life he sided with the more moderate Calvinists. It was customary for wealthy burghers, such as Witsen, to have their portraits painted.
