De bouw van twee gashouders van de Hollandsche Gazfabriek aan de Schans

As the city’s only gas factory, the Amsterdamsche Pijp-Gaz Compagnie was able to dictate prices. In order to end this monopoly, sugar producer and major gas user C. de Bruijn built a second factory in 1845. On 23 August 1847 the factory began to produce gas, initially at the same price as its competitor. The painting, commissioned by C. de Bruijn, was purchased by Th.W. van Outersterp. He supervised the boundaries of new building plots. He is pictured in the left foreground.
