De Munttoren gezien van het Singel
In the eighteenth century cityscapes were very popular with collectors. Jan ten Compe qualifies as one of the main specialists in this field. His distinguished-looking view of the Munt tower on the Singel was purchased in the year it was painted by the Amsterdam collector Gerret Braamcamp. Some years after the auction of the latter’s famous collection in 1771 it was bought by the Russian ambassador. After roaming through Russia, England and Belgium the panel was donated to the museum in 1936.
