De overlieden van het Chirurgijnsgilde

The headmen of the Surgeons Guild paid hundred guilders each for this painting. Doctor Willem Röell (1700-1775), depicted in the portrait in the portrait, paid separately. The guild board depicted here was appointed after a notorious corruption scandal. The former board had resigned after malpractices with surgeon’s diplomas and funds for widows. Three of them can be seen in the painting above. The one person to divulge the affair was Abraham Titsingh (1684–1776), seen here on the far right. With his colleagues, he is testifying to the integrity of the new board. The oldest surgeon in the group, Bartholomeus Vermeij (c. 1663–1733), points meaningfully to the diploma he is holding, while Willem Monnikhoff (c. 1677–1759) gestures to the motto in the portrait of Röell: ‘VIGILATE JUSTE’, or ‘Be vigilant and honest’.
