Hoge hoed, gevelsteen

Stone tablet with a simple broad-rimmed so called Syndics of the Cloth Guild hat. It comes from Passeerdersstraat no. 19 and was acquired in 1934 by the K.O.G. These kind of hats was made of felted beaver hair and for that reason also called 'kastoor', derived from the Latin word castor meaning beaver. Shortly after 1647 Hendrick Pietersz., hatmaker of profession, builds a house on Passeerdersstraat with four small houses in the back, reachable along a passage which later was called the Hatmakers passage. The house and the small houses in the back were demolished in 1925 and replaced by a garage. The stone tablet with the hat was acquired by the K.O.G. On Rozengracht no. 204 a stone can be seen with three practically identical hats, also with elegant bits of string and tassels, with the subscription IN DE SWARTE KASTOOR (In the black kastoor). Size: 45 x 58 cm.
