Gevelsteen 'ALCKMAR'

Three stone tablets with coats of arms with rich ornaments and different cartouches. The three reliefs come from the, in 1856 demolished, Waardpoort in Oudewater. This town-gate had been built in 1585 and renovated in 1607. The year is also clearly in relief on the stone with the coat of arms of Oudewater; on the stones with the coat of arms of Alkmaar and of Delft the year numbers have been removed (chiselled away) but they are still partly readable, certainly under the coat of arms of Delft. Thanks to their late 16th-century ornaments, the cartouches in which the coats of arms are placed look older than from 1607. Size: 65 x 60cm.
