Egidius van den Bempden (1667-1737), burgemeester van Amsterdam

The immensely wealthy Van der Bempden (1698–1748) first became burgomaster in 1738. He was removed from power by Stadholder Willem IV in 1748 when, at the specific request of the citizens and threatened by a people’s uprising, he tried to win over the Amsterdam government. Aegidius van der Bempden had his portrait painted with great pomp and circumstance: on the right you see the Roman fasces, the symbol of power, a cushion bearing the coat of arms of Amsterdam and the monogram of the Dutch East India Company, the VOC.
